PROPOSED TITLE: A critical review on causes of construction accident and fatalities in Hong Kong using accident causation theories. AIM and OBJECTIVES OF THE DISSERTATION: Aims: Review on the leading causes of construction industrial accidents and worker’s death in construction site and how it relates to accident causation theories. Objectives: 1. Carry out a comprehensive analysis and research on causes of deaths in construction and current legislation concerning workers protection. 2. Prepare questionnaire and interview / survey with related professionals, senior management and front line staff to obtain their opinion/ viewpoint on legislation that protects workers. 3. Critical review on different accident causation theories and how they relate to industrial accidents. 4. Carry out data analysis and discover the reason for lower accidental rate. SYNOPSIS AND PLAN OF WORK: (In at least 500 words, please give details of the proposed dissertation) In this dissertation, I will critically review the major causes of workers death in construction site. I will review the accident causation theory and how it relates to industrial accidents. Introduction to the Occupational health and safety elements in construction and how it relates to the construction industry. Part 1- Introduction Introduce the Occupational Health and Safety elements in construction site and how it relates to construction safety. Discover the major causes of death in construction site and how the current legislation in Hong Kong protects worker. Literature review on the accident causation theories and how it relates to industrial accidents. Will also introduce the different legislation used in other countries which Hong Kong can learn from and state their advantages and disadvantages for better worker protection. Part 2- Findings and discussion Find the major causes for workers’ death in construction accident. Identify the causes and compare with other countries. Review the cost of accidents. Detailed discussions on the accident causation theories and how it relates to industrial accidents. State the advantages and disadvantages for implementation of these theories in Hong Kong. Part 3- Case Study and analysis Case study will be based on current safety performance of construction industry. Discuss the nature of construction industry in Hong Kong including the legislation, management and government intervention. Will discuss the accident causation theory and analysis of the system and implantation in Hong Kong projects. Overview of the RGBC works in Hong Kong and the changing trend. Part 4- Questionnaire and survey Prepare questionnaire and interview with related management staff, frontline supervisor and workers to understand their opinion and suggestion on the current legislation and the major causes of construction site accident. Part 5- Conclusion and recommendations Based on the literature review, case study and findings to list out problems and solution during carry out these management skills and constrain. Review the current legislation and make recommendation with other international standards to improve workers’ protection. Suggest improving the safety performance of RGBC works.
