Cite using Chicago Manuel of StyleA detailed formal analysis is required for any paper assignment in Art History. The formal analysis breaks down how a work is visually organized and establishes how that organization helps to shape its communication.
For this paper you will begin with a brief description of the work that generally begins with one or two sentences incorporating basic information drawn from the museum or gallery label: artist/s or culture, title or type, date, medium and dimensions.
Following the description, the formal analysis concerns the choice of visual elements and their orchestration into a whole by a means of design principles. Visual elements, the building blocks of visual art, include line, shape, light, value, color, texture, space, time and motion. Design principles, which organize these elements into an overall design, or composition, include unity, variety, balance, emphasis and focal point, proportion and scale, and rhythm.
The second paragraph will include a brief literature review detailing what scholars have said about the artists work. You may cite scholarly articles, exhibition catalogs, books etc.... Keep in mind that Wikipedia and most websites dedicated to a single artist are not viable references. In your literature review, you will tell me what has been said about your artist and their work.
In the third paragraph will offer information related to the concept behind the work, generally referred to as the historical context to include iconography (subject matter/forms with specific cultural meaning) and style often related to the artist, period or culture. You might also include some reference to the artists biography and career if it is relevant to concept of the work (for example, Andy Warhol began his career as a commercial illustrator in New York City which greatly influenced his particular style). The original intention of the work, how it was initially perceived by its original audience and socio-political factors may also be included. How does the work specifically reflect what was going on at the time that it was created?
