Armed militants on motorcycles

Our assigned reading material this week highlights international terror attacks in locations such as Israel, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and in several other countries.
In this Critical Thinking Exercise, please reflect on the international terrorism incidents that we have learned about and compare them to terror attacks that involve United States targets. Then, please compare international terror responses and counterterrorism to what is taking place in the United States. Is the United States more or less prepared for a terror attack? Why?
Assigned reading material: India (January 21, 2002): Armed militants on motorcycles fired on the U.S. consulate in Kolkata, killing five Indian security personnel.

The international terrorism incidents that we have learned about this week highlight the global nature of terrorism. These attacks have occurred in countries all over the world, and they have targeted a wide range of victims. In some cases, these attacks have been motivated by religious extremism. For example, the attacks in Sri Lanka were carried out by a group of Islamic extremists who were opposed to the country's Buddhist majority. In other cases, these attacks have been motivated by political goals. For example, the attacks in India were carried out by a group of Kashmiri separatists who were seeking independence from India. The United States has also been a target of terrorist attacks. The most notable example of this is the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. However, the United States has also been targeted by a number of other terrorist attacks, including the Boston Marathon bombing and the 2013 attack on the Washington Navy Yard. The responses to international terrorism vary from country to country. Some countries, such as Israel, have a very robust counterterrorism infrastructure. Israel has been targeted by terrorist attacks for many years, and it has developed a number of effective counter-measures. Other countries, such as the United States, have also taken steps to improve their counterterrorism capabilities. However, there is still more that can be done to prevent future terrorist attacks. In terms of preparedness for a terrorist attack, the United States is probably more prepared than most other countries. The United States has a large and well-funded intelligence community, and it has a number of counterterrorism agencies that work together to prevent attacks. However, no country is immune to terrorism, and there is always the risk that a terrorist attack could occur. Here are some of the key differences between international and US responses to terrorism:
  • International responses are often more focused on deterring future attacks, while US responses are often more focused on apprehending and punishing the perpetrators of attacks.
  • International responses are often more reliant on cooperation between countries, while US responses are often more unilateral.
  • International responses are often more focused on protecting soft targets, while US responses are often more focused on protecting critical infrastructure.
Overall, I believe that the United States is more prepared for a terrorist attack than most other countries. However, there is always the risk that a terrorist attack could occur, and we should continue to work to improve our counterterrorism capabilities.
