Art History
Since at least the 1960s, artists have acted as activists by creating work that either uncovers, challenges, or
undoes oppressive social and political structures. From the Civil Rights Movement to the Gay Liberation
Movement to the formation of feminism to the rise of identity politics, artists have had an integral role in
contributing to the development and success of these historical breakthroughs. For this paper, select an artist
or group of artists and discuss how their work is an example of activism within a social movement.
