To develop a greater appreciation of the visual arts and their cultural impact, this exploration of art across time and place allows learners to identify ways in which artists from different cultures use the visual arts to address similar themes, ideas, and perspectives. ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS PART 1: ARTWORK SELECTION 1. Selection of one work of art from the specified time periods and different from the culture you identify as your own. a. Total of 3 works of art. b. Selected artwork must share a common theme or topic. c. Time periods: i. Time period 1: 10,000 BCE – 500 CE ii. Time period 2: 500 – 1800 CE iii. Time period 3: 1800 – 2017 CE 2. Articulate your rationale for choosing the selected pieces of artwork. a. Why did you choose these works of art? b. What do you find engaging about them? 3. Identify and describe the common theme that the selected artworks share. 4. Explain the significance of the theme. a. Why is it important to varied groups of people across time and place? 5. Include images of your selected works of art or web links to the images in your paper. a. Cite the owner of the artwork; either under the picture or in the web link. i. Review and implement any suggestions from your professor from Part 1: Artwork Selection when working on Part 2. 2. Identify the theme that each artwork addresses. a. e.g.: power and authority, religion, spirituality, character, virtues, political, social concerns, a historic event, an individual, etc. 3. Describe the significance that the theme holds for the artist. a. Why did the artist choose to share his or her perspectives on this theme by making the selected artwork? 4. PART 3: PERSPECTIVE ON CULTURAL DIVERSITY 1. Describe how your three selected artists, artworks, and themes are similar across culture and time. a. Identify the ways your selected works of art reflect influences from other cultures. b.
