In lieu of an exam, a scholarly paper on an ethical dilemma encountered
or observed during your rotations or clinical experiences or an ethical
issue that you are particularly interested in researching will be required to
complete the course requirements NURSB 250. The point of this
assignment, which serves as a “capstone” paper, should demonstrate
your ability to analyze an ethical dilemma or issue using basic theory in
ethics and ethical decision-making. You are to critically examine an issue
or dilemma and to apply the steps of an ethical decision-making model to:
• Identify the problem
• Determine the nature and dimensions of the dilemma
• Apply ethical concepts as relevant to the situation (altruism,
beneficience, justice, etc. – see PowerPoint posted on eLearn)
• Apply the Nursing Code of Ethics as you generate possible courses
of action (options)
• Consider the consequences of the actions identified, choose what in
your opinion, would be the best course of action(s) and WHY?
• Identify what in your opinion, is the best course of action and the
rationale for your choice.
• Evaluate what you believe would be the outcome(s) or your choice of
action
• Briefly discuss how this issue might influence your own practice in
the future
• Summarize your paper
