Assignment—Students’ Choice Nomination
p Assignment—Students’ Choice Nomination
PUP 200 Cities in Cinema
The following make-up assignment provides students the opportunity to recover points lost due to one
absence. The score earned on the assignment will replace the lowest quiz and activity score earned during the
semester.
Assignment Overview
In this assignment, you are challenged with the task of identifying a film to nominate for the “students’
choice” movie that we will watch on the last day of class. The film you nominate should not only have been
shot in a city, but more importantly, should be an example of cities in cinema. Consider a movie that is
actually about a city, where a significant portion of the film takes place outdoors in a city, or where the city
has a profound impact on the actions of the characters in the film.
Submitting the Nomination
Craft an essay that includes the following:
Provide background information on the movie you are nominating.
Explain why it is an appropriate film for a class on cities in cinema (see above).
Clearly identify how the film relates to concepts discussed in lecture.
Your written essay should be no less than 1 page (double-spaced) and no more than 2 pages in length.
All essays should reflect your own individual work. Any direct quotes from sources utilized must be cited
properly with page numbers using a consistent citation style throughout. Sources should also be listed in a
reference section at the end of the essay. Your essay should be thoroughly proofread for spelling,
punctuation, and grammatical errors. Essays containing excessive errors will not be accepted for credit.
Essays are due by Sunday night March 19th before midnight and should be submitted via the link on
Blackboard found under the “Make-Up Assignment” tab. NO late essays will be accepted.
Nomination Judging
The teaching assistants will conduct the first round of judging, and will select from their assigned group the
nomination that best exemplifies the requirements listed above. Each student whose nomination is selected
from a TA group will receive an additional 3 extra credit points.
Nominee movies selected by the TAs will appear on a class-wide ballot, and students will vote for their choice
for the film at the end of the semester. The student whose nominated movie is selected by the class, will
receive an additional 5 extra credit points.
