Atlantic World: Europe and the Americas, 1700-1989

The slave trade transformed America forever. Based on the slaves’ experience described in the primary sources’ the oral history of Esmeraldas, and the critical video of Palmares, place those unique experiences in the context of international commerce, migration, and capitalist expansion. How did slavery change their lives? How did they resist? What outcome did they experience?

You will answer all those questions by using Davis Eltis article (and/or other articles on the essays section at http://slavevoyages.org), the document on Primary Sources from the Transatlantic Slave Trade, uploaded on Nexus, the video clips of Esmeraldas and Palmares, and you can use the class lectures for general context.

As in any essay, you will start with an introduction (about 200 words) where you briefly describe the slave trade (two or three sentences), state the purpose of your work, your thesis, what are you doing, what sources are you using, and how are you doing it.

You need to place the slave trade in a historical context (about 200-250 words), analyze the sources, make comparisons, and provide an argument to your thesis (500-750 words) and finalize the essay with a conclusion where you summarize your findings (about 100-150 words).

Familiarize yourself with the Chicago Manual of Style for footnotes (no endnotes, no in-text citations!!!) and include a Bibliography (not Works Cited!!!) at the end of the essay.

Your final essay will be double-spaced and be of about 1200 words. Use Times New Roman, 12pt, or Arial, 11pt. font for writing it. Upload a .docx file on Nexus before the deadline. The file must be in this format:_Essay1.docx (don’t use another file format).

As the documents and the rest of the material are not standard citations, I provide the formats for the Chicago style.
