Black life in Chicago.

We are examining the larger idea around Black life in Chicago. The purpose of this analysis is to help us better understand the reaction to the 50 school closings that happened in 2013. The decision to close these schools was the result of decades of divestment in communities of color in Chicago. During the great migration, African Americans migrated to the North to escape racial discrimination, segregation, and lynching. They arrived in Northern cities hoping to find equality and improved life experiences. What did they find? Chicago was once though to be a “Black metropolis”. Has it lived up to that? Your research paper should address the following questions:

  1. What and where is the city of Chicago in regard to being considered a Black metropolis today?
  2. What does life look like for people of color in Chicago and what contributes to this?
  3. To what extent are people of color “subordinated and excluded in relation to white people” in Chicago? “What are the mechanisms by which the system is maintained, and how do the lives of people of color reflect this subordination or exclusion?
