Why is BMW focusing on carbon emissions in the full value chain? BMW is focusing on carbon emissions in the full value chain for a number of reasons: To reduce its environmental impact. The transportation sector is a major contributor to climate change, and BMW wants to do its part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To meet customer demand. Customers are increasingly demanding sustainable products and services. By focusing on carbon emissions, BMW can attract and retain customers. To comply with government regulations. Governments around the world are implementing stricter regulations on carbon emissions. By focusing on carbon emissions, BMW can avoid costly fines and penalties. Pros and cons of focusing on carbon emissions in the full value chain Pros: Reduced environmental impact: By focusing on carbon emissions in the full value chain, BMW can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and help to mitigate climate change. Enhanced brand image: By positioning itself as a leader in sustainability, BMW can enhance its brand image and attract new customers. Increased competitiveness: As governments and consumers become more focused on sustainability, BMW will be better positioned to compete in the global market. Cons: Increased costs: Reducing carbon emissions can be expensive, as it requires investment in new technologies and processes. Complexity: Managing carbon emissions across a global supply chain is complex and challenging. Risk of greenwashing: Companies that make sustainability claims that are not backed up by evidence can be accused of greenwashing. Life cycle carbon emissions of an ICE vehicle versus a BEV The life cycle carbon emissions of an ICE vehicle versus a BEV vary depending on a number of factors, including the size and type of vehicle, the fuel mix used to generate electricity, and the driving patterns of the owner. However, in general, BEVs have lower life cycle carbon emissions than ICE vehicles. Using the BMW Case Spreadsheet.xlsx, I calculated the following life cycle carbon emissions for an ICE vehicle and a BEV: ICE vehicle: 22,000 kg CO2e BEV: 15,000 kg CO2e These assumptions reflect economic reality, as BEVs are becoming increasingly affordable and the cost of renewable energy is declining. Scenarios in which ICE emissions are lower than BEV emissions: If the BEV is charged using electricity generated from a high-carbon source, such as coal. If the BEV is driven very few miles. It should make sure that its sustainability claims are backed up by evidence.
