Book Bags
Building relationships with students and families so learning continues at home allows students to make
connections to new learning in all content areas. Understanding the need to invest in young children is
important to maximize their future success and well-being.
Create three take home book bags to develop the home/school connection for the same grade you focused on
in your unit plan. Each book bag should be aligned to a selected children’s book and include an at-home
activity that is family-friendly. The content and format of materials in the book bags should take into
consideration diverse family backgrounds. These book bags are an opportunity to provide additional support to
families to encourage them to further develop their child’s learning outside of the classroom.
Consider the unit plan you have just completed. What could you send home to parents that might continue the
learning at home?
Create a one page flyer for each book bag to provide the following information to parents:
-The purpose of the book bag
-The selected book title.
-An activity to complete using the book, with clear directions for the
family. Consider integrating the arts into the activity.
-A fun, simple way for families to provide you feedback on the
activity. This could also incorporate the arts.
