  Title: Building an Inclusive and Equitable Education: My Journey as an Educator Introduction Education is the cornerstone of a just and prosperous society, and I firmly believe that all children deserve an inclusive and equitable education. In this personal paper, I will discuss my professional experience as an educator, articulate my leadership style, and highlight my non-negotiables in creating a safe and welcoming environment for students. Professional Experience Over the past six years, I have had the privilege of teaching in various capacities, which has provided me with a breadth of experiences and insights. I hold credentials in Career Technical Education (CTE) and Restorative Practices, allowing me to bring a diverse range of skills and perspectives to the classroom. My teaching assignments have included working with students from grades 9th through 12th, teaching subjects such as math, business courses, and providing student support. These varied roles have given me a deep understanding of the unique needs and challenges students face at different stages of their academic journey. Additionally, I have taken on leadership responsibilities within my school community. As the Athletic Director, I oversee all school athletic programs, ensuring that students have opportunities to engage in physical activities and develop valuable life skills through sports. Moreover, as the College Director, I maintain partnerships with Cuyamaca College and oversee all college courses offered at our school, providing students with pathways to higher education and career development. Leadership Style: Servant Leadership In my role as an educator, my leadership style can be described as servant leadership. I believe in putting the needs of students and the school community above my own. This approach involves actively listening to students, parents, and colleagues, and collaborating with them to create an environment that supports student growth and success. Servant leadership encompasses empathy, humility, and a commitment to fostering a sense of belonging. By truly understanding the needs and aspirations of students, I can provide guidance and support tailored to their individual circumstances. I strive to empower students to take ownership of their education and become active participants in their own learning journey. Non-Negotiables: Building Relationships and Creating a Safe Environment In my view, two non-negotiables for any effective educator are building relationships with students and creating a safe, welcoming environment. These elements form the foundation for students’ academic and personal growth. Building relationships means taking the time to understand each student’s unique background, interests, strengths, and challenges. By establishing meaningful connections, I can create a supportive atmosphere where students feel valued and understood. This allows me to tailor my teaching approach to meet their individual needs and inspire a love for learning. Creating a safe environment goes beyond physical safety; it encompasses emotional safety as well. Students need to feel comfortable taking risks, making mistakes, and expressing their thoughts and opinions without fear of judgment or ridicule. It is through this safe environment that students can develop resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging within the classroom community.
