Write an essay in which you compare and contrast the two ways of working--carving and assemblage--by answering the below questions.
Please use 12-point, double-spaced font. If you do a thorough, thoughtful job it should come out to 1.5 pages.
In the first paragraph, please describe the method Anna Rubincam uses to make a sculpture. What does she do physically? What does she seem to be
thinking about? How does she interact with her material? Draw upon direct quotes from Rubincam in the video, as well as things you see her do.
In the second paragraph, please describe the method that either Betye Saar, George Herms, and/or Agathe Snow uses to make a sculpture. What do they do
physically? What do they seem to be thinking about? How do they interact with their materials? Draw upon things that Saar, Herms, and Snow say about the
process.
In the third paragraph, compare and contrast the two processes. Do you think that they start from similar or different places? Do they get ideas in the same
way? Do you think they plan their work in the same way? How are the activities they engage in different, at a physical level? Do you think they make different
kinds of decisions about their work as they work?
In the fourth paragraph, state which process you yourself would prefer to undertake. Are you inclined toward carving or toward assemblage? Why?
