case study

Health care A 40 yr old female firefighter (5 ft 5 in. or 165.1 cm; 140 lb or 63.6 kg; 28% body fat) has enrolled in the adult fitness program. Her job demands a fairly high level of physical fitness—a level she was able to achieve 5 years ago when she passed the physical fitness test battery used by the fire department. Before becoming a firefighter, she jogged 30 min, usually three times a week. Since starting her job, she has had little or no time for exercise and has gained 10 lbs. She is married, and she works 12 hour shifts and takes care of three children, ages 5, 7 and 9. At least two times a week, she and the children eat out, usually at restaurants like Tim Horton’s and McDonald's. She reports that her job, along with the responsibility of raising her three busy children, is quite stressful. Occasionally she experiences headaches and a tightness in the back of her neck. Usually in the evening she has two glasses of wine to relax. In an attempt to lose weight, she eats only one large meal a day, at dinnertime. Results from her fitness evaluation: Resting HR = 75 bpm Resting BP = 140/82 mmHg Results from her aerobic treadmill test using the Bruce Protocol: Stage METs Duration (min) HR (bpm) BP (mmHg) RPE 1 2.3 3 126 145/78 8 2 3.5 3 142 160/78 11 3 4.6 3 165 172/80 14 4 7.0 3 190 189/82 18 Q1) Comment on the HR, BP and RPE responses to the cardiorespiratory exercise test.
