JOSEPH ANSWER:
Theme One for Week 8 asks, "How do we describe the leader of today? How do they behave? What role do they have in the business and how do they lead?"
When considering leadership in an increasingly diverse society which is shaped by swiftly changing technologies, there are several questions which emerge. First, how
do we describe the leader of today? Second, how does the leader of today behave? Third, what role does the leader of today have in the business and how do they lead?
The answer to the first question is that a true leader is both a boss and a manager (Reddy, n.d.). This person establishes and maintains healthy relationships with
their employees, both subordinators, and superiors (Reddy, n.d.). This person is courageous and concerns themselves with the future, possessing an understanding of how
choices and factors currently in play can affect the future (Kuhn, n.d.). There is research which suggests that a leader has a certain “look” and is creative and open
(Gaskell, 2016). In terms of how this individual behaves, this individual learns from their mistakes and is willing to admit when they are wrong (Reddy, n.d.). They
are encouraging and supportive to their colleagues, whether subordinate or superior, but they are also willing to challenge their subordinates (Gaskell, 2016). They
model appropriate behaviors, including “the core competencies of creative expression” (Gaskell, 2016). They take responsibility for their mistakes and learn from them
(Reddy, n.d.). This individual values diversity and works to ensure that their network –within the workplace and beyond – reflects diversity (Kuhn, n.d.). This valuing
of diversity extends to behaviors in the workplace as well, as they create diverse work groups and encourage participation in those groups (Gaskell, 2016). The leader
of today recognizes the importance of feedback and, as such, is willing to provide constructive feedback to colleagues (Gaskell, 2016). The role that the leader of
today has in business has several dimensions. They serve as boss and manager (Reddy, n.d.). They facilitate and encourage creativity and innovation (Gaskell, 2016).
And they facilitate and encourage diversity.
