Comparing antivirals and no treatment for COVID infection

Scenario 2
Your grandma (85 yrs) has been keenly watching the COVID updates on the nightly news to see if she can keep going to her weekly bingo club. So far, she has had the recommended vaccination schedule as suggested by the Health Department and hasn’t tested positive. She took a short family trip last week for a wedding and on arriving home realised she had developed a sore throat and runny nose. A PCR test indicated she is now COVID positive. On the news she’d noticed mention of new ‘antivirals’ (Paxlovid) and wanted to know how they are different from antibiotics ( such as Amoxicillin). Her GP has offered a script for these antivirals but she’s not sure if they’d really speed up her recovery. Before she fills the script, she has asked you to check the evidence comparing antivirals and no treatment for COVID infection.
Part 1
In this part you will start by identifying a relevant research question relevant to your chosen scenario. You will also need to justify the research paradigm that is best suited to answer this question.
In the template answer:

  1. Your research question
  2. Which paradigm (type of research) does this question suit? Justify your choice in 2-3 sentences.
    Part 2
In this part of the task you will begin by operationalise your search terms using PICO/PICOT and appropriate databases and limiters.
    In the template:
  3. Complete the 'Key Terms' column of the table to operationalise the relevant search terms for your research question and scenario. You must have at least two key word alternatives for each relevant section of the framework. Key Terms Example
    Participants Adults with depression
    Intervention/
    Exposure Chocolates
    Comparator Exercise
    Outcome Mood
    Time Short term
  4. Identify four databases that you will use to search for studies. Note: for this task Google Scholar is not considered a database.
  5. List four relevant limiters that can help to refine your search.

Part 3

Now you are ready to search the literature. Using two databases you have identified in Part 2 and relevant combinations of your key words and limiters you'll create a search string. The results of this search should align to your scenario and help you to find an answer to your research question.
In the template:

  1. Complete the table in the template to present three relevant papers, using at least two databases (identified in Part 2). The journal articles found in your search should help you to answer the research question from your chosen scenario.
In the table ensure you add the author details (using Harvard UniSA in text format), the database, search string and limiters used, and the DOI of the paper. Note: If there is no DOI on an article, please insert the URL instead.
