Before managing conflict, an ARNP must identify its origin:
Interprofessional Conflict: Disagreements with physicians over autonomy or scope of practice, or friction with nursing staff regarding hierarchical changes.
Patient/Family Conflict: Differences in goals of care, such as a family demanding aggressive treatment when the ARNP recommends palliative measures.
Intrapersonal Role Conflict: The tension between the ARNP's role as a "caring" nurse and a "cost-conscious" provider/diagnostician.
