Defining Ethics

In my own words, ethics refers to the internal moral framework that guides an individual’s decision-making process, specifically in distinguishing between right and wrong. It is a systematic reflection on how we should behave based on shared values like integrity, fairness, and respect for human rights. Ethics go beyond simply following the law; they represent the spirit and intent behind our actions.

Concrete Example: Consider a police officer who discovers that their partner has used excessive force during an arrest. While "the law" might require a report, the officer’s ethics are what drive them to report the incident even if they know it might damage their professional relationship or result in social ostracization within the department. The ethical choice prioritizes the principle of justice over personal loyalty.Concrete Example: Consider a police officer who discovers that their partner has used excessive force during an arrest.
