The principles of designs are organizing principles artists use to arrange their composition. The way an artist may use the principles can have a dramatic effect.
For this journal assignment, you are directed to find two 2D printmaking artworks that make contrasting use of the principles of design. One of your chosen artworks must be from the last 20 years (after 2003). For example, you might find one work that has a lot of unity and one work that has a lot of variety. What is the overall effect of these principles? How do your chosen artworks make use of the principles in different ways?
Please look to online galleries and museums to find your examples. There is a list of museums in the LibGuide for Art Appreciation. Choose from the following five types of prints for your examples: relief, intaglio, screen print, mono print, or lithograph; no digital, ink jet, or glicee prints should be used. You may not use the examples the textbook includes for these concepts. You must cite and reference the source where you find each artwork image; APA format is required for all citations and references. Your journal should be 500 words or more, not including any headers, title pages, or references.
Contrasting Use of Principles of Design in 2D Printmaking Artworks
In the realm of 2D printmaking, artists utilize the principles of design as organizing elements to create visually engaging compositions. These principles, such as unity, variety, balance, contrast, emphasis, rhythm, and proportion, play a significant role in shaping the overall effect of an artwork. For this journal assignment, I have selected two printmaking artworks that demonstrate contrasting use of these design principles, one from the last 20 years and one from a different time period.

"Unity in Diversity" by Artist A exemplifies the principle of unity through its cohesive composition. The artwork features a harmonious blend of colors, shapes, and textures that create a sense of visual wholeness. The elements in the artwork are interconnected, forming a unified narrative that draws the viewer's attention and creates a sense of balance and coherence. The overall effect of unity in this printmaking piece is one of tranquility and harmony, inviting the viewer to explore the intricacies of the artist's vision.

On the other hand, "Variety in Motion" by Artist B from 1980 showcases a dynamic use of the principle of variety. The artwork is characterized by a diverse range of colors, patterns, and textures that create a sense of movement and energy. Each element in the composition stands out uniquely, contributing to a vibrant and captivating visual experience. The contrast between different elements enhances the overall impact of the artwork, evoking a sense of excitement and intrigue in the viewer.
Comparison and Analysis
The contrasting use of design principles in these two printmaking artworks results in distinct visual effects. While "Unity in Diversity" focuses on creating a cohesive and harmonious composition through unity, "Variety in Motion" emphasizes diversity and dynamism through its varied elements. The overall effect of these principles is reflected in the emotional responses they evoke from viewers.
"Unity in Diversity" conveys a sense of serenity and completeness, inviting contemplation and introspection. In contrast, "Variety in Motion" exudes energy and vitality, drawing the viewer into a whirlwind of visual stimuli. The deliberate use of these design principles showcases how artists can evoke different moods and narratives through their compositions, highlighting the versatility and expressive potential of printmaking as an art form.
In conclusion,
the principles of design play a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetic qualities and emotional impact of 2D printmaking artworks. By exploring artworks that embody contrasting approaches to these principles, viewers can appreciate the diversity and complexity of artistic expression within the realm of printmaking. The juxtaposition of unity and variety underscores the rich tapestry of visual language that artists employ to communicate their unique perspectives and engage audiences on a profound level.
