Critically reflect on feedback that you have received while working as a student nurse.
The feedback I received was base positive based on the treatment a pt with dementia had, after a gyne elective surgery. She could not communicate the pain she was in as she was scared. We tried different approaches but it did not work making the pt quite anxious and not taking any medication. I managed to calm her down after some chatting and tea. The supervisor prised me but I was very nervous all the time.I attached the structure the paper should have but in summary it has to be divided into 2 parts.

It comprises four quadrants: the Open Area, Blind Area, Hidden Area, and Unknown Area. In this context, it is essential to reflect on the situation involving a patient with dementia after gynecological elective surgery, where I received positive feedback for my approach. Open Area In the Open Area, I had clear knowledge of my skills in patient interaction and the importance of effective communication. I understood that patients with dementia often struggle to express their feelings or discomfort. This understanding allowed me to create a safe environment for the patient. Blind Area In my Blind Area, I was unaware of how my nervousness was affecting my interactions. While I was aware of the patient's anxiety, I did not recognize that my own apprehension might be contributing to her distress. My supervisor's praise indicated that, despite my nerves, my actions were effective, which I had not fully acknowledged myself. Hidden Area The Hidden Area contains my feelings of self-doubt and anxiety. I often felt insecure about my ability to manage complex patient interactions, especially in high-pressure situations. However, I kept these feelings hidden, focusing instead on providing compassionate care. Unknown Area The Unknown Area encompasses aspects of my skills and abilities that I have yet to discover. The positive feedback revealed that I possess a natural aptitude for calming anxious patients, which is a strength I had not fully recognized until this experience. By analyzing my experience through the lens of the Johari Window, I can better understand how self-awareness and interpersonal dynamics affect my nursing practice. Part 2: Reflection Using Driscoll's Reflective Model Driscoll's reflective model consists of three key components: What? So What? Now What? This structure will guide my reflection on the feedback received during this patient interaction. What? In this situation, I was tasked with caring for a patient who could not communicate her pain due to her dementia. Initially, I felt overwhelmed and nervous about providing adequate support. After several unsuccessful attempts to address her anxiety and pain, I engaged her in conversation and offered her tea. This approach seemed to calm her down, leading her to accept medication for her discomfort. My supervisor praised my efforts, highlighting the effectiveness of my approach. So What? Receiving positive feedback from my supervisor was a significant moment for me as a student nurse. It affirmed that despite my nervousness, I had successfully managed a challenging situation. This experience highlighted the importance of emotional support in nursing care, particularly for patients who may struggle to articulate their needs. Additionally, it emphasized the value of patience and empathy in nursing practice. However, I also recognized that my anxiety could potentially hinder my performance and interactions with patients. Now What? Moving forward, I intend to focus on building my confidence in clinical settings. To do this, I will seek opportunities for practice in similar situations, allowing me to develop strategies to manage my nerves effectively. Additionally, I will engage in reflective practice regularly to enhance my self-awareness and identify areas for growth. Seeking mentorship and discussing experiences with peers can also provide insight into how others manage similar challenges. Conclusion The feedback I received during this encounter not only affirmed my ability to connect with patients but also illuminated areas where I can grow as a student nurse. By utilizing frameworks like the Johari Window and Driscoll’s reflective model, I can critically assess my experiences and continually improve my practice. Embracing both positive reinforcement and constructive criticism will enable me to develop into a more confident and effective nurse.
