Debate Writing

The debate writing activity assignment entails students working on a debatable/controversial topic. Students research the topic from both sides, that of the proponent (for) as well as the opponents (against) sides of the debate and present this information in a 3 to 4-page essay using APA documentation guidelines. This debate activity includes persuasion, which uses ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the audience (see handout for debate and course book chapters).

The debate can begin with “There are those who believe that distance learning is the best method of teaching in the 21st century, YET, there are those who believe that the traditional style of teaching is a more productive approach to teaching.” The student then goes on to present the first and then the second argument, in a logical, convincing manner, substantiating both sides of the debate, with authoritative sources.
