Discussion 10. Administration, Sales and Marginal Jobs
This discussion will be graded using the Discussion Participation Rubric.
For Chapter 13 discuss EACH of the following using at least 5 key terms and concepts:
a. In 1980, in a Fortune 500 company, the Clerical career field had more employees than the Mechanical, Technical, or Other career field. By 2000, the clerical career field had ceased to exist. Based on your reading of Hodson and Sullivan and your personal experience or research, what factors led to the rise and fall of the clerical career?
b. Discuss and give an example of the interaction of job enlargement, job enrichment, specialization, and routinization as they are reflected in the changing role of clerks. If possible, use the organization of your choice as an example.

a. What is the shadow economy and why does it exist?
b. Select a marginal job and describe it in terms of job regularity, stability, adequacy of employment, and legality.
c. There are several organizations and publications that focus on entrepreneurs, or business people of certain racial, ethnic or gender groups (Black Enterprise Magazine, National Association of Women Business Owners, etc.) Examine the web sites for at least three of these organizations and/or publications.,
- Why do you think minority group members are over-represented in marginal jobs? (Use citations to support your answer).
- What advice do these publications/organizations give minority group members desiring to move beyond marginal jobs?
d. Describe the experience of the organization of your choice with the shadow economy and marginal jobs.
