ECONOMIC MODEL and DIAGRAMS

  1. Watch the video from Economics USA on the costs and benefits of environmental policies titled “Pollution”. The link to the video is: https://www.learner.org/series/economics-ua-21st-century-edition/ (please scroll down to video #8 in the list)
  2. Watch a video of a talk by Bjorn Lomborg, who is a Danish social scientist suggesting that cost-benefit analysis does not support aggressive policies to combat global warming, compared to other development policies. The link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtbn9zBfJSs
  3. Read an article critical of Bjorn Lomborg’s views. The link is: http://johnquiggin.com/index.php/archives/2005/01/21/copenhagen-review/
  4. Do your own research on global warming policies (read at least 3 articles or papers on the topic – I require citations of these in your bibliography)
Your paper will be on the cost-benefit analysis of global warming policies, national and global initiatives (including international accords and treaties). Your paper should contain a statement of benefits and costs of an aggressive policy to combat global warming at local, national and global levels; a discussion of why you think Bjorn Lomborg’s position on global warming is right or wrong (you must support your opinion using economic logic); what policies, if at all, do you advocate to combat global warming and why. As before, you may use all notes, articles, etc., but be careful about plagiarism. I will be using Turnitin for plagiarism checks.
More specifically, write a paper discussing the benefits and costs of an aggressive policy to combat global warming, in light of your readings. Your paper should be at least 3 pages, excluding the bibliography page, and not more than 8 pages (size 12 Times New Roman fonts – including title and headings, 1.5 line spacing, 1.5 spacing between paragraphs and headings, 1 inch margins on all sides).
As mentioned your paper should contain the following:
  5. A statement of benefits and costs of an aggressive policy to combat global warming.
  6. A discussion of why you think Bjorn Lomborg’s position on global warming is right or wrong. You must your opinion using economic logic. (USE A RELEVANT ECONOMIC MODEL and DIAGRAMS – this will increase your grade a lot for this assignment)
  7. What policies, if at all, do you advocate to combat global warming? Why?
The paper will be graded on material, logic, clarity, correctness, and cohesion. Please remember that page and formatting directions will be STRICTLY ENFORCED. Plagiarism will earn you a failing grade on the paper.

a. This rubric is not set in stone. It is just to give you an idea. There may be some variation according to my discretion.
b. This is not an English class. But we communicate in English. Chances are that if someone communicates poorly and I cannot understand the material or logic, I may think those are sub-standard as well.
