1) Cover a topic related to American Literature up to 1865. You can choose something historical, social, political, or literary, but your topic should always relate to the literature aspect of whatever you are writing about.
2) Be 6-8 pages, typed and double-spaced. This is roughly 1500-2000 words if you prefer to monitor your word count. The length of your required paper does not include your Works Cited page (this page will bring your finished page count to 7-9 pages). Use Times New Roman size 12 font.
3) Use a minimum of 5 sources. 3 of these sources should be articles or books (rather than something posted on a website). All 5 of them can be this type of source, but some of you may find something written on a historical database or government database, for example, that is not a written article or book but is still a valid source.
Your sources should be valid, scholarly, academic resources. Be sure to evaluate each source for its authority and validity.
4) Include a Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your paper.
5) Use MLA for both the citation of your quotes (and paraphrasing, which also requires citation) and your Works Cited page.
6) Adhere to college level grammar, punctuation, and spelling standards. Be sure to proofread, proofread, proofread before you submit!
