ENHANCING YOUR UNIT: READING TO CHILDREN

P‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍REPARE FOR YOUR DISCUSSION Review the Module 2 resources on reading aloud to young children. Based on what you have learned from the resources about reading aloud and quality books for children, choose a book to share that relates to the focus of your unit (unit plan, which is to provide opportunities for children ages 3 to 5 to learn through play and exploration). Also, consider the group of children (preschooler ages 3 to 5) with whom you will be sharing the story. Are there any modifications or accommodations you need to make for children whose primary language is not English? Consult the resources, which provide guidelines for reading aloud to children and sharing your story. Take time to really ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍get to know” the book you have chosen and practice reading it aloud. Share your book with the children. POST YOUR RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. What was the title and author of the book you chose to read, and how did it connect to your unit? What strategies did you use to promote children’s engagement? Did you need to modify the experience to ensure that children whose first language is not English felt included and involved? Based on the questions in the template, how did this experience go? How effective were your strategies? Were children engaged in the story? How could you tell? What went well? How would you like to improve? Why is reading aloud with young children valuable and imp‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍ortant?
