Environmental Science - perfluorinated alkyl acids

PFAS (perfluorinated alkyl acids) have been identified as potentially causing a wide range of negative health effects due to their persistence in the environment upon initial release. The reaction from the EPA has been unusually slow and the individual states have taken up the effort to hold companies accountable for the clean-up and liability for subsequent health impacts.

In your opinion, do you feel the responsibility falls to individual states to manage or should the federal government take control? What are the benefits and drawbacks of federal interventions in this instance?
