What ethical theories came into play when looking at “Harvest of Shame” and the changes that have occurred since? ? What hasn’t changed? Look at “Food Chains” -What ethical justification is being used to support the system of using migrant farm workers? ? Evaluate the Ethics of using Migrant farm workers in the US – what protection do they have – Legally? Morally? o Remember; Most migrant farm workers are NOT U.S. citizens, but many are here legally just during the harvest seasons. ? What about the lack of protection for child labor in agriculture- why/how does this occur in the U.S.? o Under what ethical theory is this justified/allowed? ? Under what ethical theories are the major retailers operating under with respect to allowing this practice to occur in America’s fields? ? What about the farmers? What ethical theories are they operating under in using these migrant farm workers, knowing the working conditions? ? Ethically speaking, is it right/fair/just to treat migrant farmworkers as non-citizens, even though their children are American-born…to deny them services in the U.S. like healthcare, social services and even aid like the food bank, even though they are legally employed in the U.S.? ? Under what ethical theories can the argument for change be made? o Can change REALISTICALLY happen? o Is it possible to have a farm labor system that is ethical in all areas, business, human rights, labor, etc… What has to be sacrificed in order for the system to function? All papers must be grammatically correct and all spelling must be correct. ? All papers need to be in APA Format- a cover page, references and citations from the case/video clips, texts, PowerPoints, and other references throughout the paper. Writing is expected to include critical thinking about how ethical theory and information from your references relate to each assignment topic. ?
