Human Trafficking Awareness: Forensic Psychology's Role

1. Topic Description

Human Trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or commercial sex acts through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. It is a crime of exploitation and is often referred to as modern slavery, as traffickers profit by compelling victims to provide labor or engage in commercial sex. This crime exploits the most vulnerable in society regardless of age, sex, socioeconomic background, or nationality.

Key Statistics

Human trafficking is a massive global and domestic problem, often hidden in plain sight:

Global Victims: The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates 27.6 million people worldwide were victims of human trafficking in 2021.

77% of these victims were subjected to forced labor.

23% were subjected to sex trafficking.

U.S. Data: While there is no single reliable national estimate, reports to the National Human Trafficking Hotline in 2023 referenced 9,619 potential human trafficking cases involving 16,999 potential victims.

The situations reported included 5,572 sex trafficking, 1,558 labor trafficking, and 1,021 combined.

Vulnerability: Victims are often targeted due to prior trauma (e.g., childhood abuse), involvement in the foster care/juvenile justice systems, homelessness, or poverty.

3. Negative Impact on Society

The impact of human trafficking is severe, far-reaching, and undermines the health and stability of communities:

Public Health Crisis: Victims suffer from extensive physical and psychological trauma, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), severe depression, anxiety, substance abuse, infectious diseases (like HIV/STIs), and chronic physical ailments due to violence and inhumane conditions. These long-term health needs strain public healthcare resources.

Erosion of Rule of Law: Trafficking is often linked to organized crime, generating an estimated $150 billion globally. It compromises national and economic security, fostering corruption and undermining the legal system.
