Exploring Frames of Reference through Childhood Stories

Objective: The purpose of this activity is to utilized Bloom’s Taxonomy level IV & V to assist students in examining and supporting their knowledge and understanding of the various Frames of Reference (FoR)
within the OT profession. This process helps the students process what they have learned and analyze
the information at different levels.
Instructions:
After the class session where frames of references (FoR) are discussed and learned, students are to write a brief short story of a frame in their childhood. The story should be about an event that happened in
their past, individually, with a sibling, or with a relationship, etc. It could be a funny story or about a time they learned a lesson.
Next, students are to write a summary of the situation from the point of view of two FoR. The students
should point out the key concepts regarding the particular theories and how it relates to their short
story

Title: Exploring Frames of Reference through Childhood Stories Objective: The aim of this activity is to engage students in applying and analyzing their knowledge of Frames of Reference (FoR) within the occupational therapy profession. By reflecting on personal childhood stories, students will demonstrate their understanding of FoR concepts and their ability to view situations from different theoretical perspectives. Instructions: Reflect on Childhood Story: After the class session on FoR, think about a memorable event or experience from your childhood. It could involve an interaction with a sibling, a significant relationship, or an individual experience. Choose a story that is either funny or involves a lesson you learned. Write a Short Story: Compose a brief narrative that describes the chosen childhood event. Include details about the setting, characters involved, and the sequence of events. Aim to engage the reader and capture the essence of the story. Summary from Two FoR Perspectives: Select two different Frames of Reference that you have learned about in class. From the viewpoint of each FoR, summarize the situation in your childhood story. Explain how key concepts from each theory relate to your personal experience. Analyze and interpret the event through the lens of each FoR, highlighting relevant aspects. Key Concepts and Application: Identify the key concepts associated with each chosen FoR. Demonstrate your understanding of these theories by applying them to your childhood story. Discuss how these concepts help explain and understand the event more deeply. Make connections between the FoR concepts and the impact they had on the situation. Reflection and Analysis: Reflect on how examining the childhood story from different FoR perspectives affected your understanding of the event. Analyze how each FoR provides a unique lens to interpret and explain human behavior and experiences. Consider the implications of applying these theories in a clinical setting as an occupational therapist. Discuss any insights or new perspectives gained through this activity. By engaging in this activity, students will enhance their critical thinking skills, analyze information at higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (IV & V), and deepen their understanding of FoR within the occupational therapy profession. This exercise encourages students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations, fostering a deeper grasp of FoR concepts and their practical applications in therapy practice.
