Exposure Assessment and Control

Exposure Assessment and Control Order Description This exercise will allow application of basic exposure assessment principles learned thus far. Given the scenario and details that follow, prepare a report describing the ‘evaluation’ phase pertaining to the respective exposures. The report must be typewritten, double-spaced, and a minimum of five (5) pages. Scenario and Details Several teachers at an elementary school in Florida have complained that working in their respective classrooms causes them to be ill. Their ailments are reported as upper respiratory tract and sinus infections, lack of energy, coughing, watery eyes, and irritated mucous membranes. School administrators recognize that the facility housing the complaining teachers is poorly designed and constructed; is not adequately ventilated; is not routinely cleaned and maintained; suffers the effects of numerous water intrusion events; has visibly soiled carpets, upholstered furnishings, and fabric window treatments installed throughout; and was built on a high-radon emitting site. Required Elements of the Report At a minimum, the ‘evaluation’ and ‘control’ report must: ? identify all of the agents (chemical, physical, biological, etc.) which are likely rendering exposures to the complaining teachers (include description of the health outcomes resulting from exposures to the identified agents), and ? develop and fully detail a proposed strategy for fully ‘evaluating’ exposures to the respective agents (the proposed evaluation strategy must list the guideline[s] to which any collected data will be compared).
