Fences

In Fences, familial patterns play a huge role in the choices, development, and self-expression of each character. The fence, an importance fixture (and character in its own right) within the play, is in relationship with the characters based on these patterns and experiences. Choose any two characters from the play and explore/explain the patterns they are reliving, revising, and/or running away from. As they live within or beyond the confines of these patterns, what does the fence represent for them. Think and answer these questions critically and carefully, and use evidence from the text to support your ideas.
