The first half of the take-home final features questions based on the readings from our "Glory Road" textbook. If you have missed chapters, it would worthwhile to read them to make sure you can supply the best answers toward your grade.
QUESTION 1: In Chapter 6, Don Haskins describes a conversation with a Texas town sheriff regarding a Black player, Bobby Joe Hill. The coach is asking about Hill's character. The sheriff recalls that Hill and two friends stole a small amount of money breaking into a laundromat, then added, "I'm goin' to tell you the truth, if them boys weren't colored they wouldn't have been arrested." Could a similar decision based on race be made today? I think we all know the answer but explain your thinking and please find three other events or memories from Haskins that back up what happened back then in Texas might still happen in 2020.
QUESTION 2: Coach Haskins writes in detail about how he feels about living in a border town with Mexico on the other side of the Rio Grande river. PleLse cover three specific opinions or points of view that Haskin has about Mexico and its people, especially those born and living just over the border in Juarez. QUESTION 3: One of the most important and compelling chapters in the textbook is Chapter 8, "Five Black Players." Why do you it is important? Why is it compelling? Think hard about these answers, analyze the chapter. Your answer should include Haskins' character traits that led to him starting five Black players for the first time in college basketball. It should also consider and write about Haskins' contention that his decision to start five Blacks would have become "an instant national story" the University of Texas or University of North Carolina but not at Texas Western (now Texas-El Paso). QUESTION 4: Why do you think I selected this book as our textbook? What does it tell you about the sports media in the 1960s and 1970s compared to present day? What did you learn about whether sports unites or divides us or both? One last question: What was your favorite chapter?
