Instructions:
C. Part I: Film Notes/Personal Reflection: Briefly reflect on the film. Your reflection should be at least 1-2 paragraphs and should address noteworthy scenes and characters that are featured in the beginning, middle, and end of the film. Discuss the film's educational value. How does it help you understand psychology through film? In other words, what insights did you gain into the major topic areas this week (e.g. psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic theory of personality development, attachment, Person-Centered Therapy, etc.)?

D. Part II: Psychological Application and Analysis

Apply concepts from the following readings and handouts in Week #4: The Psychodynamic and Person-Centered Therapy Perspectives, Attachment and Therapy Module.

  1. Personality Structure: apply id, ego, and superego to Will.
  2. Which 2 Defense Mechanisms do you think Will uses most often? Provide examples from the film. (2 examples)
  3. Psychosexual Stages of Personality Development: Which stage do you think best describes Will's personality and why? (Hint: think about fixation as you formulate your response. )Provide at least one example from the film that supports your position.
  4. Psychoanalysis: apply 1 technique to the film (e.g. free association, transference, countertransference, resistance, etc.) and provide an example of the technique from the film.
  5. How would you describe Will's attachment style? Skylar's? Provide examples from the film that support your assessment. Refer to the handout and/or reading on attachment style in your response.
  6. Person-Centered Therapy: apply 1 technique to the film (e.g. unconditional positive regard, active listening, genuineness, empathy, acceptance, etc.) and provide an example of the technique from the film.
  7. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Select one character and decide where you believe they are on the hierarchy. Explain using an example or examples from the film.
