There are many valuable benefits to a business when effective safety and health programs are implemented. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA], (2021a), safety and health programs assist businesses:
    • Prevent workplace injuries and illnesses
    • Improve compliance with laws and regulations
    • Reduce costs, including significant reductions in workers' compensation premiums
    • Engage workers
    • Enhance their social responsibility goals
    • Increase productivity and enhance overall business operations
    • Improve workplace morale
    • Improve employee recruiting and retention
Safety and health programs also foster a proactive approach, rather than a reactive approach, to finding and fixing workplace hazards before they can cause injury or illness (OSHA, 2016).

  3. Worker Participation: Workers should have an active role in the development and implementation of programs; have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities; free to voice safety and health concerns.
  4. Hazard Identification and Assessment: Established procedures are vital in conducting ongoing job hazards; hazard analysis must be continuous to identify new hazards in the workplace through periodic inspections and reassessments.
  5. Hazard Prevention and Control: When health and safety issues are identified, the best methods for eliminating, preventing, or controlling the hazard must be implemented by both management and employees. Controls are selected
