Horticultural, agricultural, industrial, and post-industrial societies

  1. Identify the major differences that exist between horticultural, agricultural, industrial, and post-industrial societies.
  2. Explain the Saphir-Worph hypothesis. Provide a clear example of how language is connected to the ideas presented by the Thomas Theorem. 3. Explain how the identity is developed at each stage of the 3 stages of development (according to Mead). What are the primary groups? How are these groups important in the development of the self? What is the looking-glass self? Explain. What does it mean to suggest that the family is an agent of socialization? If the family is an important agent, how is it possible for "bad" children to be produced by "good" families? Explain?
  4. What is bureaucracy? Explain. What are the five ideal characteristics of a bureaucracy? Be sure to provide a brief, but a clear, explanation of all five.
  5. Explain the major differences between Conflict and Structural Functionalism. How does each see the role of institutions in society (what institutions do/how they operate according to the respective theories)? Explain.
