Human Resources Management (HRM)
The last time you saw Peter, he was still pretty bummed about the idea of not being a plumber anymore. After all, it seemed impossible to stay in that line of work with his medical restrictions: no repetitive bending, no stooping, and no heavy lifting. He can only lift up to 15 pounds from ground level, and only once or twice an hour. He will also need a sit/stand option.
Peter has informed you that Home Warehouse called and wants to interview him for the department supervisor position! You’re going to help him prepare for the interview. Peter is very nervous about interviewing and has some questions for you. Please describe how you would respond to Peter's questions (listed below; be sure to number your answers), explaining in detail why you advised Peter to respond the way you did.
In Question 2 regarding how Peter should respond to the questions, please provide the exact statements of what Peter should say, using "I" statements. This means write your responses as if Peter were addressing the interview committee himself.
Answer the questions thoroughly based on information from this course, specifically Quarter 3, Peter’s restriction information in the project introduction, and the department supervisor job description download.
Questions
If asked, how should Peter address his employment gap while being out on workers’ compensation? Should he tell the interviewers about his injury? Why or why not?
What if the hiring committee asks the following questions in the interview? Please identify whether the question is legal or illegal, explain your choice, and describe how you would advise Peter to respond. Make sure to use the course material and required reading to back you up.
“Why did you leave your last employer?”
“Can you perform the essential functions of the job with or without an accommodation?”
“Why do you want this job?”
“Why do you use a cane?”
“Are you taking any medications we should know about?”
If he were to need an accommodation, how would you advise him to ask for it, and at what step of the employment process?
What else would you advise him on or recommend he do before and after going to the interview?
