Lack of clinical judgment in the diagnosis of schizophrenia among African Americans

Over-diagnosis or misdiagnosis of schizophrenia among African American is a long lasting and critical disparity in mental health Services, which is detrimental because it increases the potential for treatment with wrong medications (Arnold Barnes, 2008). Schizophrenia is a brain disorder which involves a range of problems with thinking, behavior and emotions (Mayo Clinic). People with schizophrenia disorder usually have psychotic symptoms, such as hallucination, delusions, thought disorder and negative symptoms. African Americans are 2-3 times to be more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia compare to the White-Americans. According to Stephen Smith (2021)- The stigma associated with African American struggling with schizophrenia exasperates the impact of its symptom and lowers level of day to day functioning. Many African American suffering with these disorder are untreated and under-diagnose due to lack of research and understanding schizophrenia. Thesis: The aim of this research paper is to find an in-depth understanding why individuals with schizophrenia diagnosis has been applied unevenly, the role of race in diagnosis and the implications of how African Americans are being treated.
