Investigation of print media and the work of women in the print media

Examine five mainstream newspapers and record the following information: the presence or absence of women editors the number of female and male bylines the number of females in photographs the number of letters to the editor written by women the amount of material or "sections" of the newspaper which could be defined as "women's interest" Purchase same-day editions of five newspapers for this report. Analyze those women in photographs by their number (of men and women), size and location in the paper. Review the content on these pages and consider the strategies being used to attract readers. Is some material being directed specifically toward women readers or men readers? Are gendered advertisements being placed alongside material that would appeal to specific readers? Provide an analysis of the content in terms of expectations of readers and of the strategies being used to attract buyers to the newspaper. As well, record material expected to be women's interest by inches, and compare this material to material expected to be of interest to men. Consider the status of women as news journalists, as newsworthy subjects and as readers in your arguments.
