Is increasing online censorship a problem? Introduction In today’s digital age, the internet has become an integral part of our lives. It serves as a platform for communication, information sharing, and entertainment. However, with the increasing prevalence of online censorship, there is a growing debate about its impact on freedom of expression and access to information. Online censorship refers to the control and restriction of online content by governments, organizations, or platforms. This essay will analyze both sides of the debate surrounding increasing online censorship. Thesis statement: By examining the pros and cons, it becomes evident that increasing online censorship poses significant challenges to freedom of expression and access to information. Pro / “For” Side Advocates for increasing online censorship argue that it is necessary to protect individuals from harmful and offensive content. They believe that by implementing stricter regulations, they can safeguard vulnerable populations such as children from explicit or violent material. Furthermore, they argue that online censorship helps maintain social order by curbing hate speech, cyberbullying, and extremist ideologies. A major argument put forth by proponents of online censorship is the need to combat misinformation and fake news. They contend that by regulating online platforms and content, they can prevent the spread of false information that can be detrimental to society. Additionally, they argue that censorship is essential in maintaining national security by preventing the dissemination of sensitive information that could be exploited by malicious actors. Supporting evidence: According to a report by Freedom House, 26 out of 65 countries assessed showed a decline in internet freedom, indicating an increase in online censorship (Freedom House, 2019). Con / “Against” Side Critics of increasing online censorship argue that it infringes upon freedom of expression and stifles dissenting voices. They believe that individuals should have the right to express their opinions and ideas without fear of retribution or censorship. Online platforms provide an avenue for marginalized communities to have their voices heard, and increasing censorship restricts their ability to participate in public discourse. Another major argument against online censorship is that it can be subjective and prone to abuse. Governments or organizations with vested interests may use censorship as a means to suppress dissent or control public narratives. By limiting access to certain information, they can manipulate public opinion and maintain their power. Moreover, critics argue that online censorship can lead to a chilling effect on creativity and innovation, hindering progress in various fields. Supporting evidence: The United Nations Human Rights Council has stated that measures to combat terrorism should not be used as a pretext for suppressing freedom of expression (United Nations Human Rights Council, 2018). Analysis & Conclusion In analyzing the arguments presented by both sides, it becomes clear that the cons outweigh the pros when it comes to increasing online censorship. While proponents argue for the need to protect individuals and combat misinformation, the potential risks of infringing upon freedom of expression and access to information cannot be ignored. Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right that should be upheld, even in the digital realm. The internet provides a platform for diverse voices and ideas to flourish, fostering innovation and progress. While there may be instances where regulation is necessary to combat illegal activities or protect vulnerable populations, it should be done with caution and transparency. In the next assignment, I will defend the “Against” side in the position essay. The arguments against increasing online censorship are more convincing due to the potential for abuse, infringement on freedom of expression, and the negative impact on innovation and creativity. In conclusion, while there may be valid concerns that necessitate some form of regulation, increasing online censorship poses significant challenges to fundamental rights and societal progress. Striking a balance between protecting individuals and upholding freedom of expression is crucial in maintaining a healthy and democratic internet landscape. Works Cited Freedom House. (2019).
