IT Ethics

This activity addresses the following Module Outcomes:
• MO1: Analyze privacy issues associated with the organizational use of personal information. (CO4)
• MO2: Compare IT ethics issues related to technology-related unethical behavior. (CO3)
This activity examines a case where Target used data analytics to determine a high school girl was probably pregnant and begin sending her information about products that would be useful for a new mother.
In preparation for this discussion, please read the required material and watch the assigned videos, then respond to the following:
In your initial post, answer the following questions from the textbook:

  1. Is Target’s data mining and predictive analytics a success, a failure, or both? Explain your answer.
  2. How does Target create profiles of customers?
  3. Is Target’s “pregnancy predictor” a long-term competitive advantage? Explain.
  4. How does Target make such accurate predictions?
  5. What are the ethical considerations of the use of this data?

    In your response, complete the following:
  6. Identify additional identity reasons why Target might invest in predictive analytics student.
