A major part of this course involves the preparation and presentation of a major study of an event in the history of international politics. The study will focus on an event in a specific foreign policy area (e.g. security, trade, environment,…) and examine the causes of the event originating either at societal, state, or individual level. Each student must submit a proposal and obtain professor’s approval. The proposal is a one page summary of the event including the timeline of the event and the most important level/s of analysis. The student briefly explains why the level/s of analysis (individual level, state or societal level, or structural level) is the most important determinant of the event.
Outline:
Page 1:
-Summary of the Event (a brief overview of the chain of incidents that caused your event): 1 Paragraph
-Identify the level/s of analysis and theoretical framework (explain why theory and the level/s of analysis are the most important one in explaining your event): 2-3 Paragraph
Page2:
-literature review (An overview of existing explanations and identify the shortcomings and possible gaps in the literature)
Page3-5: (up to 3 pages)
-offer your analysis of the event based on what you learned in class. You may break down the chain of the incidents and explain how your theory explain this chain at the identified level/s of analysis. You may cite the relevant works here as well.
