In a 3-page essay (not counting the title page, reference page, or abstract) formatted per APA 7th edition rules, discuss the following ensuring you cite the article for support in your answers:
1. What assumptions did you have about introducing AI into the HR function of strategic decision making prior to reading this article? Did anything in the article change your assumption?  Why or why not?
2. Since we assume AI outperforms human personnel in certain tasks, should HR leaders be focusing more on developing their current workforce, or prioritizing the use of AI? Why?
3. If AI is unpredictable and often unreliable, how are we being “strategic” by utilizing AI if it can be labeled as unpredictable?

The hypothetical article likely challenged this assumption by focusing on the reality of algorithmic bias and the "black box" problem. What typically changes this perspective is the realization that AI systems are only as objective as the data they are trained on. If historical hiring data reflects past systemic discrimination (e.g., favoring one demographic for promotions), the AI will faithfully reproduce and even amplify that bias, creating a technically efficient but ethically flawed system. This realization shifts the perspective from viewing AI as a neutral efficiency tool to recognizing it as a complex socio-technical system that introduces new forms of technical debt and ethical liability. My assumption is fundamentally altered from "AI ensures objectivity" to "AI requires intense human governance to mitigate inherited bias."

AI, Workforce Development, and Prioritization

Since AI undeniably outperforms human personnel in routine, high-volume tasks (such as screening thousands of résumés, administering compliance training, or analyzing basic engagement data), the strategic choice for HR leaders should prioritize developing their current workforce rather than solely focusing on deploying more AI. The rationale is rooted in the concept of complementarity within a functional Socio-Technical System.

Prior to reading this article, many, myself included, assume that introducing AI into the HR function, particularly for strategic decision-making like workforce planning or high-volume recruiting, would primarily yield pure objectivity, increased efficiency, and unbiased scale. The assumption stems from the belief that algorithms, when fed data, can operate without the cognitive shortcuts and emotional biases inherent to human judgment. AI was viewed as the "silver bullet" solution to historical HR inconsistencies, promising decisions based purely on performance metrics and predictive data models (Smith, 2024).
