I work in a rural area at a technical college. Because the institution is very small, the president at the institution makes himself available to all nt,as much as possible. I had the chance to talk to him about the direction of higher education. According to him, education is on a continuum. For our institution, the main focus is work readiness. Our students must be work ready once they graduate from Southeastern Technical College. However, the planning involved in getting our students there seems limited. It is limited in the sense that there is focus in so many areas that the student and the student needs are within what is supposed to be strategic planning. According to Buller (2015), it is important that through strategic planning the mission, goals and values of an institution are not lost. When this happens, students and student success is lost as well. The goal is not to become bigger simply in number, although enrollment is a big part of an institutions considered success. The goal is to target problem areas and resolve these issues will better the institution and student success. Hinton (2012) suggested much discontent with strategic planning through her mention of the many different faculty members who were frustrated with strategic planning and its lack of effectiveness and the many different theories that have been deemed supportive of it. It is not that strategic planning does not work, but the implementation of it can be ineffective leaving administration, faculty members, and stake holders-especially students frustrated with educational issues that can be rectified through effective strategic planning. Many strategic plans are carried out over years. Buller (2015) talked about one institution that was employing a five year plan to resolve most issues. This was not effective because the plans were not incorporating the changes that were taking place that could possibly affect learning during that five year plan. Buller (2015) and Hinton (2012) both have interesting perspectives of strategic planning, and they are not saying that it does not work. However, strategic planning will not work without effective implementation. Therefore, strategic planning should allow for possible changing that will occur on the continuum that my president and I discussed because education is constantly evolving. Buller, J. L. (2015).
