Slide 3: The Florida Board of Nursing (BON)
Focus: Governing Your Practice
The Florida BON is housed within the Department of Health and is responsible for regulating nurses to ensure public safety.
Who is on the Board? The Florida BON consists of 13 members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate (Florida Statute 464.004):
7 Registered Nurses (RNs), including at least one APRN and one nurse educator.
3 Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs).
3 Consumer Members (must not be, or ever have been, licensed healthcare professionals).
How Does One Become a Member?
Application: An interested, qualified individual submits an application to the Governor's Appointments Office.
Review: The Governor reviews applications, looking for experience, expertise, and willingness to uphold the law.
Appointment: The Governor appoints a member.
Confirmation: The appointed member must be confirmed by the Florida Senate. Members serve 4-year terms.
Slide 4: General RN Scope of Practice Regulation
Regulation Example: Delegation (Florida Statute 464.003 & 464.018)
Regulation: The Nurse Practice Act (NPA) dictates that only an RN or LPN may delegate duties to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP). Furthermore, delegation requires the delegating nurse to retain accountability and ensure the delegated task is within the UAP's training and scope. The RN must not delegate assessment, planning, evaluation, or teaching that requires nursing judgment.
