In very different ways, of course, both Madame Bovary and The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass contend with the relationship between literacy and freedom. Focusing mostly on one of these texts, but while drawing a comparison between the two works, how do these two texts contend with the notion of literacy? And how does that connect to the question of freedom, broadly conceived? While keeping in mind, of course, that the stakes are obviously much higher for Douglass.
