From this week's reading, please list and discuss the major rights of consumers. For each right, relate this to a real-world applicable example.
Before reading these rights, how many rights were you already aware of as a consumer?
Do you have an example you would like to share of a time that you feel your consumer rights were violated?
Major Rights of Consumers
Major Rights of Consumers
Right to Safety: Consumers have the right to be protected from products or services that are hazardous to their health or safety. This includes ensuring that products are properly labeled, providing warnings about potential dangers, and adhering to safety regulations. For example, a consumer purchasing a car expects the vehicle to meet safety standards and not pose any risks to their well-being.
Right to Information: Consumers have the right to receive accurate and complete information about products and services. This includes clear and truthful advertising, transparent pricing, and disclosure of any relevant information that may affect the consumer’s decision-making process. For instance, when purchasing a food product, consumers have the right to know the ingredients, nutritional information, and any potential allergens.
Right to Choose: Consumers have the right to choose from a range of products and services at competitive prices. This means that consumers should have access to a variety of options and be able to make informed decisions based on their preferences and needs. An example of this right being exercised is when consumers compare prices and features before purchasing a smartphone from different brands.
Right to Redress: Consumers have the right to seek compensation or remedies if they experience any harm or dissatisfaction with a product or service. This includes the ability to file complaints, request refunds or replacements, and have access to fair dispute resolution processes. For instance, if a consumer purchases a faulty appliance, they have the right to demand a repair, replacement, or refund from the manufacturer or retailer.
Right to Consumer Education: Consumers have the right to access information and resources that enable them to make informed choices and understand their rights and responsibilities. This includes consumer education programs, guidelines, and educational materials provided by government agencies or consumer protection organizations. An example of this right being exercised is attending a workshop or seminar on financial literacy to learn about managing personal finances effectively.
Right to be Heard: Consumers have the right to express their opinions, concerns, and complaints about products or services. This encompasses the freedom to provide feedback, participate in decision-making processes, and have their voices heard by businesses, government bodies, or other relevant stakeholders. A real-world example of this right is when consumers write reviews or rate products online, influencing others’ purchasing decisions.
Before reading about these rights, I was already aware of three of them as a consumer: the right to safety, the right to information, and the right to choose.
As for a violation of consumer rights, I recall an incident where I purchased an electronic device online. The product description stated that it had certain features that were important to me, but upon receiving it, I discovered that those features were not present. When I contacted the seller for clarification and a potential solution, they were unresponsive and did not provide any resolution. This violated my right to information as the product description was misleading, and my right to redress as the seller did not offer any compensation or remedy for the misleading information provided.
