Background
You are meeting with your management team and briefing them on observed operation problems. You are not quite sure what the root cause is yet, but you have some ideas on determining the problem and what the desired to-be condition should look like. Use this assignment as an opportunity to articulate your research proposal. Because you are researching the organization, it is appropriate to seek approval before doing so. In this assignment, you aim to get approval.
Instructions
Your project should consist of no more than 10 slides. Please use bullet points to explain your messaging and avoid paragraph statements. Your arguments should be cited throughout the presentation. Any metrics used in your presentation can be considered grey literature and should be cited as such. Aim for an 8–12-minute recorded presentation include your talking points in the “notes” section of each slide.
Articulate the operations management problem in the organization. Incorporate all feedback from the week one draft slides and prepare to talk about the proposed problem.
You are expected to discuss the following information:
• Introduce the organization.
• Expand on the as-is operations management condition.
• Mention the 3-5 problem statements you want to address in your research.
• Introduce the question you aim to answer: What can be done….?
• Note: This question should be your final version after incorporating feedback
• Provide any notable metrics you plan to measure your improved performance.
• Describe the quality tools that will be used to describe the problem.

Slide 2: Introduction to NationaliTeas
Global Presence: Large international corporation manufacturing and selling high-quality tea worldwide.
Mission: To deliver exceptional tea products while adhering to ethical and sustainable sourcing practices.
Operational Footprint: Complex, multi-region supply chain involving sourcing, blending, manufacturing, and distribution across four continents.
Strategic Priority: Maintaining brand reputation and pursuing B Corp Certification requires flawless operational execution.
[Notes Section - Talking Points]: For those unfamiliar, NationaliTeas operates a complex global network. Our mission is built on quality and ethics. Therefore, any operational weakness directly threatens our brand reputation and our strategic goal of achieving B Corp status.
Slide 3: The As-Is Condition (Current State)
Observed Problem: Persistent, unpredictable delays in product delivery to major distribution centers.
Metric Impact (Grey Literature): On-Time Delivery (OTD) has fallen from 95% to 88% over the last two quarters (Internal Operations Report, 2025).
Symptom 1: Quality Concerns: Increased customer complaints related to taste inconsistency and packaging defects.
Symptom 2: Cost Overruns: Rising emergency logistics costs (expedited shipping) to compensate for production shortfalls.
Root Cause: Currently unknown, but suspected issues exist in tea blending and quality gate processes.
[Notes Section - Talking Points]: Our current state is suboptimal. The key metric illustrating this is our OTD, which has declined significantly. This isn't just a logistics issue; it's symptomatic of deeper problems, as seen in the rise of quality complaints and resulting cost overruns from rushed shipping.
Slide 4: The Research Imperative: Problem Statements
Our investigation aims to address the following critical problem statements:
Supply Chain Variability: Why has the lead time variability from raw leaf procurement to final manufacturing increased by 25% (Internal Data, 2025)?
Quality Degradation: What is the primary cause of the 15% increase in product batches failing internal taste and blend consistency audits (QC Logs, 2025)?
Process Gaps: Where are the key operational bottlenecks or "non-value-added" activities leading to production delays?
Resource Misallocation: To what extent are current employee training and quality control resources misaligned with operational priorities?
[Notes Section - Talking Points]: To be effective, we need to focus. These four problem statements will guide our root cause analysis. They cover variability, quality, process gaps, and resource effectiveness, providing a comprehensive scope for the research.
Slide 5: The Guiding Research Question
The Core Question (Final Version):
What operational and process improvements can be implemented at NationaliTeas to stabilize the global tea blending and packaging operations, thereby achieving a sustained On-Time Delivery (OTD) rate of 98% and reducing quality-related customer complaints by 50% within 12 months?
[Notes Section - Talking Points]: This is our driving question. It is focused, quantifiable, and tied directly to our desired outcomes. It moves beyond identifying the 'what' to defining the 'how,' which is essential for a solution-oriented project.
Sample Answer
This outline constructs a 10-slide presentation for a management team meeting, designed to secure approval for an operations management research proposal. Since the specific organization and Week 1 feedback are unknown, I will use the fictional company NationaliTeas (from the previous context) and a plausible operational problem (supply chain delays/quality control issues) to demonstrate the required structure and content.

Slide 1: Title Slide
Title: Operations Performance Optimization Research Proposal
Subtitle: Addressing Inefficient Supply Chain and Quality Control in Global Tea Manufacturing
Presenter: [Your Name/Title]
Date: October 9, 2025
[Notes Section - Talking Points]: Good morning, everyone. This proposal outlines a critical research project to stabilize our core operations. Our goal is to secure approval today to formally investigate the root causes of recently observed inefficiencies affecting our global supply chain and product quality.
