Manager as Communicator: Forms of Communication
Introduction
Communication is a vital aspect of effective management. Managers need to be skilled communicators in order to convey their vision, motivate their team, and achieve their goals. There are various forms of communication that managers can utilize to effectively communicate with their team members and other stakeholders. This essay will explore the different forms of communication, including verbal, non-verbal, written, and electronic communication, and provide examples from personal and career experiences.
Verbal Communication
Verbal communication involves the use of spoken words to convey messages. It is the most common form of communication in the workplace and can take various forms, such as one-on-one conversations, team meetings, presentations, and phone calls. Verbal communication allows for immediate feedback and clarification, making it effective in situations that require real-time interaction. For example, as a manager, I have conducted team meetings to discuss project updates and address any concerns or questions raised by team members.
Non-Verbal Communication
Non-verbal communication refers to the use of body language, facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice to convey messages. It complements verbal communication and can sometimes be more powerful in conveying emotions and attitudes. Non-verbal cues can include eye contact, hand gestures, posture, and facial expressions. For instance, as a manager, I have used non-verbal cues such as nodding my head and maintaining eye contact to show active listening during employee performance reviews.
Written Communication
Written communication involves the use of written words to convey messages. It includes emails, memos, reports, and other forms of written documentation. Written communication provides a permanent record of information and allows for precise and detailed communication. For instance, as a manager, I have written project briefs and instructions for team members to provide them with clear guidelines on their tasks and responsibilities.
Electronic Communication
Electronic communication refers to the use of electronic devices and platforms to convey messages. It includes emails, instant messaging, video conferences, and social media platforms. Electronic communication enables managers to communicate with remote team members or stakeholders who are geographically dispersed. For example, I have used video conferences to conduct virtual team meetings with team members located in different offices or countries.
Conclusion
In conclusion,
effective communication is essential for managers to succeed in their roles. By utilizing different forms of communication, such as verbal, non-verbal, written, and electronic communication, managers can effectively convey their messages, build strong relationships with their team members, and achieve their objectives. Understanding the various forms of communication and applying them appropriately in different situations is crucial for managerial success.
