“Learning From Mis-Steps”
Students will write a paper in which they demonstrate their ability to implement and evaluate a responsive strategy with a client system (individual or family)
in which they attempted to apply theoretically grounded, evidence-informed, client-sensitive intervention, but the intervention system did not work.
In the paper, present a process recording that illustrates how a particular strategy was utilized; (drawing on relevant theory, research, evidence, and client
feedback); they will analyze why they think it did not work, and they will develop a plan for correction (drawing on relevant theory, research, and client
feedback). The content of the paper should include:
- Practice context, setting, and how that affected clinical practice. The context and setting can include physical space and agency policies.
- Focus of work: identify a client and focus for work (e.g., presenting problems, clinical issues that emerged in treatment, cultural and diversity issues,
gender, disability and ethics and values, and the socio-political influences on your client’s concerns.) - An initial biopsychosocial is not sufficient for this assignment. You can start with the initial biopsychosocial that is used to develop an assessment of the
client. Include in the assessment of client coping strategies to reinforce and improve adaptation to life circumstances and events and environmental barriers
to treatment. - Student’s assessment and understanding of the original problem/focus for work (using practice theories/models, assessment results, relevant literature
and knowledge/information from other sources, human rights, and social justice) from a strengths perspective. - Intervention plan that evolved from the assessment and was informed by theory, research, and client preference
- Student’s descriiption of the practice missteps, including a practice excerpt from a process recording to illustrate it. Using reflective practice, describe how
different decisions regarding assessment and interventions can be used in the future. Please use the columns in the process recording to record comments
on the excerpt. The student will indicate what skills/theories/models they were trying to use in those comments. Why did you choose the intervention? Was
the intervention you used based on any assessments that were implemented during the assessment process? - Critical and reflective analysis of the mis-step, including conclusions about why the mis-step occurred. Mis-steps can occur when a theory or assessment
is not used to inform your practice interventions. Mis-steps can also occur when our own biases and countertransference interfere with our work. Identify
and use knowledge of relationship dynamics, including power differentials, when analyzing the mis-step. - Plan for correction that draws on relevant theory, research, and client feedback.
