Museum Assignment Phase #2
PHASE TWO OF RESEARCH PROJECT
The Great Migrations in American History and Literature
In this second phase, you will be writing a short paper that begins by analyzing how your specific painting fits within the concept of genre paintings. Then you will create a story about the characters, actions and events depicted in the painting you have chosen to research.
Length: A minimum of TWO typed pages, using exact MLA format.
Please follow the exact organization outlined below:
I. Title page, exactly as we have discussed it, which means with the name of the painting, the name of the painter, accession number, and the museum at the BOTTOM OF THE TITLE PAGE.
II. Introductory paragraph: This will be similar to what you have done in Phase One, with painting, painter, accession number, museum, and gallery number within the museum. You will also add a few sentences beyond what you did in Phase One to introduce the concept of genre painting.
III. The next TWO TO THREE PARAGRAPHS (approximately, use your judgment) will focus on your discussion of the concept of genre painting. What does Peter Brownlee say about genre painting? How does your painting in general fit within the concept of genre painting? Here, you must have AT LEAST ONE MLA style citation to the Brownlee book, American Encounters: Genre Painting and Everyday Life.
IV. Now, move on to create a story of what is happening in your specific painting. Be creative. Tell the story of the characters, events, actions, and objects, of what you think is occurring, in your chosen painting. Be as specific as you can. This will be about TWO TO THREE PARAGRAPHS (again, approximately, use your judgment).
V. All papers must have a conclusion paragraph. Try to tie in what you have said about the concept of genre painting and how that fits with your story from your painting.
VI. Works Cited page: This page will have the citation to your painting; the Peter Brownlee book; our History textbook IF you have used it for this phase; any descriptions used from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s web-site; and anything else you might have used IF you used anything else--though we do not recommend outside sources for this phase.
VII. Use exact MLA format; watch alphabetical order for Works Cited listings.
VIII. Print TWO identical copies and proofread carefully.
